Admissions

Admissions to the nursery

There are 39 places in this well resourced department which are allocated on a separate morning and afternoon basis. In the term before entering one of the reception classes, children spend time in the main school and have the experience of staying to lunch. An application form for the nursery can be obtained from the school office. Southway Primary School caters for pupils from 3 to 11 years old.

The school works with Caterpillar Playgroup to give opportunities for some full time education on certain days.
The Nursery is linked to the reception area by a play barn which enbles transition for children to more formal learning experiences.

 Admissions to Main School

The school serves the Southway area and has a Planned Admissions Number of 60. Children are normally admitted to the main school at either the beginning of the Autumn or Spring Term. Children born between September and February enter in September whilst children born in March to August enter in January.
When the children start school, they enter one of the reception classes and usually remain in that class until the following September. The school has adopted the admission and appeals policies of Plymouth City Council.
When children are admitted at other times they will be placed in a class appropriateto their age.
On admission, essential information about each child is required by the Authority for storage on computer and is covered by the Data Protection Act.
Parents are encouraged to tour the school before making an application foradmission for entry and should contact the school to make a convenient appointment.

                        Classroom Organisation

Children are assigned to mixed ability classes according to their age. The Governorsdo not agree with having class sizes over 30 and will refuse admissions to new pupils when this level is reached.
The class teacher has the responsibility for organising and developing the full range of curriculum subjects, although there is a degree of specialisation for Music and P.E.
